Vendor Selection & Frequently Asked Questions

When should I book my vendors?

I get this question quite frequently from a lot of couples and it varies depending on an array of factors. You should book your vendors based on what is most important to you after you have created your guest list.

You can’t book much until you know how approximately how  many people will be attending

The first thing I always suggest is once your guest list is created and you know how many people you are looking to have at your wedding, book your venue. Once your venue is secure, you can start to picture which vendors you need in the space. Some venues have a preferred vendor list so avoid booking any vendors until you find out if there are some have exclusivity rights with your venue.

What are your non-negotiables?

If the most important thing to you is the food at your wedding, don’t leave booking your caterer until the last minute. Make sure you try the food they will be preparing for you, and don’t be afraid to make special requests. Caterers are flexible and if they want your business, they will accommodate your special requests.

Don’t wait too late to book your VIP Vendors

If you are in a situation where you have a vendor you are set on working with, be sure they are available for your date and be sure to ask your venue before you book if they allow certain outside vendors ( Example caterer, DJ etc). If you have been getting your hair done by the same hairdresser your entire life and can’t imagine having anyone else touch your luscious locks on your big day, make sure they are available on your wedding day. If you want to book vendors that are more popular in your area, it is likely they don’t have a lot of availability  ( unless your wedding is 2-3 years out) so I would reach out to them as soon as possible.

My Caterer doesn’t do tastings, How can I try their food?

Some caterers are in such high demand they may not offer a tasting. That can be very scary for something like a wedding. Something you can ask them is if they are catering a charity event or fundraiser that has tickets for sale. This is a great way to be a guest on the receiving end of the meal without the enormous pressure of it being your wedding day, give you a chance to have a night out with your fiance, and support a great cause!

When should I book the rest of my wedding vendors?

Before you look at any list of “When should I book my vendors” make sure you understand that every wedding is different and every couples priorities are unique. I would book all of your vendors as soon as possible to secure them early BUT don’t rush into booking anyone unless you are absolutely sure they are the best fit for you.

How to be sure you are making the right choice when selecting a wedding vendor

Make sure you read vendor reviews, have a consultation with them and your fiance has met them. It’s important to understand that in a society where weddings are becoming bigger and bigger, popular vendors may have a great reputation, but that doesn’t mean they will be a good fit for you. Your personalities should click, if you prefer working with someone with a soft personality rather than a drill sergeant – keep that in mind. It is important you also find someone that understands your vision and is able to make on the spot decisions on your behalf if ( and likely when )something goes wrong.
